Malaysian Election Commission |

The Malaysian Election Commission (or Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya, SPR) was established on September 4, 1957 pursuant to Article 113 and 114 of the Federal Constitution. The members of the Election Commission are appointed by the Yang di Pertuan Agong (HM the King) after consultation with the Council of Rulers. On formation, the Election Commission comprised of the Chairman, and two ordinary members. Upon the formation of Malaysia in 1963 with the inclusion of Sabah and Sarawak, the number of members was increased by one, to represent Sabah and Sarawak on rotational basis. Article 114 was amended in 1981 to create the post of Deputy Chairman. Since then, the total number of members of the Commission stood at five.
The Elections Commission has established a Secretariat to enable it to efficiently carry out its functions. This Secretariat is headed by a Secretary who acts as the Administrative Head.
Amongst the functions of the Election Commission are to:
- carrying out the registration of voters and updating of voter records;
- conducting elections (both at the State level and the Parlimentary level);
- resolving claims and objections from candidates & voters;
- conducting the votes counting process; and
- setting boundaries for voting divisions for General Elections.
